ESSENCE MAGAZINE is the preeminent lifestyle magazine for today’s African-American woman. The publication has a monthly circulation of 1,066,245 and a readership of 8 million. The first issue of ESSENCE hit the newsstands in May 1970, with a circulation of 50,000. In 2003, ESSENCE ranked seventh on Advertising Age’s “A-List,” which recognizes magazine excellence. This is the first time that an African-American targeted publication received this honor.
Internship Description
ESSENCE is looking for junior, senior or graduate level students who are able to complete an internship for academic credit. All candidates must have an appreciation for the magazine industry, be self-motivated and detail-oriented. Positions are available in the general editorial, fashion, beauty, art and photo departments. Candidates must, have strong writing and organizational skills and an interest in African American culture. Art and photo candidates must have proficiency for graphic design and/or photography with a working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Microsoft Suite applications.
These are unpaid positions. All candidates must be able to receive school credit. A minimum of 2 days per week is required. Student must be based in the NYC area.
Additional Info
Candidates should be motivated, have an understanding of various high end and moderate level designers, possess an interest in African American culture and have the ability to multi-task in a very hectic environment. An understanding of color, fabric, and design is also helpful. The intern will be expected to work with both accessories and ready-to-wear editors. Candidates must also be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and skilled at efficient multitasking. This is an unpaid position. All candidates must be able to receive school credit and provide a letter of agreement written on school letterhead.
