Aka how to promote your fashion blog! I’m splitting this post in to two parts because there’s SO much to cover. All of this information is pretty boring, not at all glamorous, but highly important. So bear with me here!

Getting In The Search Engines
You can use a submission service like Addme. com to quickly add your website to a variety of search engines. However, this isn’t the quickest way to get indexed. You can get your website listed in go ogle quickly by obtaining a link to your site from a site that is already indexed. Or alternatively, you can submit your site to a social bookmarking service such as Digg.com or StumbleUpon.com (there’s also Del.icio.us, Technorati, Reditt and a TON of others).

Once you’ve used either method (linking or social bookmarking) PING IT. What is pinging? It’s a really powerful and simple tool for blogger that alerts search engines and directories that you’ve updated. The two best tools to ping are Pingomatic.com and KPing.com. Just plug in your URL, hit “submit” and you’re good to go! You should ping your blog main page, the content pages, any page that has recently linked to your site AND the social bookmarking page you set up.
Making The Search Engines Love You
There are certain things you need to do to your blog to make search engines like it. Search engine traffic is only one slice of the pie when it comes to overall traffic, but it’s a very important part. This is all called SEO (search engine optimization) and it starts from the inside out. I touched on this a little bit in part two.

  • Add meta tags to the HTML of your blog. Use this tool at AddMe.com to have these tags quickly generated. You’ll need to choose 5-10 keywords that describe your site. This should include long tail keywords that are 3-4 words long. Use a tool like the one at inventory.overture.com to get a good idea of what people are searching for. Put those keywords in keyword section of your meta tags and hang on to them, you’ll need them later.
  • If you can, take one of those keywords, the one that is the most descriptive of your site, and use it in the title of your page and description.
  • If it works with your layout, add < h2 > and < h1 > tags to the top of your page and of course, use a keyword if possible.
  • And basically sprinkle your keywords throughout your page and in your content as often as you can. Also put them in the “alt” tag of your images. Be sure to use bold tags around the keywords a few times as well.
  • Also if you’re using WordPress, be sure to set up your page urls to look like this: http://yourblogurl.com/index.php/123/descriptive-post-title-ere and not like this: http://yourblogurl.com/p=3930.

These keywords are basically food for the search engine spiders that will crawl your page. Having them on your page will get you indexed in the search engines under that search term.

Okay, all of this information is pretty technical, and I hope my explanations are clear! Confused about anything? Just leave me a comment or email me and I’ll get back to you asap!
